Axis Syllabus Lab Class:
Dance from the Heartbeat-Breath Complex
I approach the body as one’s greatest teacher, and facilitate class with this principle at the core. In particular, I am interested in the relationship between the pumping of the heart and the wild waves of diaphragmatic breath. Accessing the anatomical relationship between the rhythms of the heart and diaphragm muscles, we can tune in to the wisdom of our own human-animal rhythm. I believe that this Anatomical Center* can help us honor ourselves and become resilient in our interaction to the environments around us.
From this attunement, we will explore the multiple relationships present in the body including joint centration, spinal mechanics, and how to work within the structural parameters of our human form. Like the heart-diaphragm complex, we explore the multiple coordinations of the body. Working with improvisational scores, small choreographies and other explorations, we find our individual and collective dance.
